Calotype Photography bio picture
  • Welcome to Calotype!

Calotype Photography is a portrait studio located in the tiny town of Anderson, Missouri. We specialize in creating beautiful, style-conscious portraits of children, families and high-school seniors.

I'm Julie Stephens, and together with my husband, Jonathan (that's us with our son Jack, left) we operate Calotype Photography. I'm the artist behind the camera, and Jonathan manages portrait sales. Baby Jack is the Calotype Poster Child, modeling in exchange for room and board. Watch out for him— he has an affinity for two-year-old girls in pettiskirts!

Do you absolutely love your family and children? Do you think pudgy baby hands and toes are marvelous? Maybe you cried on your son's first (and second) day of kindergarten, or maybe you're the mom that gives your daughter a standing ovation at every dance recital. If you believe your children are the best thing ever, then call us at 417.845.1151 to schedule a Portrait Session. We may not be able to bottle up all that childhood sweetness, but we can capture it on canvas, and you'll be filled with joy each time you see it!

PS: Browse our blog and leave a comment. We would LOVE to hear from you!

Special thanks to Richardson Studio in Bloomington, IN for our family portrait.

Mad About Blue

Love, love, love photographing families.  Especially happy ones.  Especially ones with little boys who talk about going fishing, and when you ask what their favorite fish to catch is, they say “preach” (instead of perch!) Love him to pieces!  I hope your nets are always filled with more “preach” than you can handle, little man!

Thanks for choosing Calotype, Gruver family.:)

Jack goes to the McDonald County Fair

… and Mommy takes her camera, of course.

First stop: the barn!  Animals!  Yay!  Every toddler should be delighted!

But when Jack first saw this:

This was the reaction:

There was a sense of mutual interest and subtle aversion, the latter mostly on Jack’s part.  The goat was pretty much down for whatever.

After his first trip to Barnyard Life, we rewarded Jack with ice cream.  (And thank you, Sugar Creek Gobblers, for providing the ice cream!)

Quick! Listen! Amateur photographers, here’s a great tutorial in a three-part series of photos: Getting Great Smiles from Toddlers.

See how easy that went down? This technique works for many adults, too.  And some pets. Jack’s fair experience definitely ended on a happy note!

Wait, don’t go! One more picture!  Unusual light from the fading thunderstorm that just had to be photographed.  With my favorite two faces, of course.  What’s light unless it illuminates something precious?

Have a great week!

I don’t like goats so my expression may just be something similar to Jack’s! Jon and Julie you have a cute little one! He is the best model!

Adam then, Adam now

This sweet little man went from this….

…to this, in just six months.  We’ve heard that can happen if you’re not careful.:)Babies don’t stay babies for long.

Here’s a few with big sis Bella…

Brand New Baby

Meet Shailyn, only six days old.  (I love to photograph tiny, new babies.  I believe they are so fresh from the Presence of God you can still feel it hovering around them!)
