Senior Pictures: 2022

Thinking about your son’s senior pictures and wondering what to do?

Did you know he can have his opinion, and you can have yours- and both be happy with the results?

Senior photoshoots at Calotype include the shots that moms love; yet consider the senior’s perspective, too. Shown here, this senior was photographed with his mom’s choice of car and then with his- a classic MG he’s in the process of restoring. The Session (usually about an hour or less) is a creative time with no bad ideas- it’s all fun and inventive. Don’t like some results? No worries. Don’t choose that image when you come back to view the portraits! There will be many more you’ll love. It’s my guarantee- or your money back!

Family With Two Year Old: Big Spring Park (Early Fall)

These images were taken October 18th. In previous years at this time, the leaves had already started changing. This year, even halfway past the middle of October, they were still very green.

I took some fall leaf garland and fake leaves to scatter in the background, hoping to add some warm fall colors- but I confess I don’t love it. With so much green still around, it didn’t look natural (see fourth image). But the weather was flawless, and the park was beautiful. Enjoy these images of a lively 2-year-old traipsing Big Spring Park.

JJ from Cocomelon makes a cameo or two- can you find him?

Senior Boy Photos In the Fall

Class of 2022 senior, photographed entirely on location in the Joplin greater area.

Scroll to the end to see some throwback photos that Calotype created (when he was only five).

And here’s that throwback I promised- from 2009

I don’t know what he was thinking about. I’m sure it wasn’t senior pictures… and how fast the years would fly.

Six Month Baby Boy Pictures (With a Special Cameo or Two from Mom)

Six month baby boy pictures… fall clothes (and a fall-in-love-with-me squishy face).

And there’s always Mom, hovering close by. I like to grab these memories for them.

Senior Boy Photoshoot: Class of 2022

Why should you have senior pictures taken?

  1. You deserve it!

  2. It’s fun!

  3. You will use these pictures more than you think. Announcements, grad slideshows, social media, applications, resumes, even LinkedIn. Calotype will make sure to cover all the requirements so you get the most use from these senior photos.

  4. You are interesting- whether you think it or not. Getting your face, your bone structure, your eyes, etc. into the right lighting can make a world of difference in how you see yourself.

Look over these senior pictures in Springfield. (I can shoot in any location, not everything needs to be in our studio). These were taken on a fall afternoon, just walking around downtown. What would you like to do for your senior photoshoot?

Senior Boy Picture Ideas: Class of 2022

What do most guys in Joplin do for senior pictures? In my 16 years of experience, there’s been a pattern:

  1. Mom calls and books the Session. Has a few ideas but ends the conversation with “….but I’ll be lucky to get him there.”

  2. On the day of the senior photoshoot, life is busy and it’s true- mom just barely gets him to show up. His clothes might be mildly wrinkled, he might need a haircut, and he’s mostly dreading it.

  3. We start shooting. I have many ideas and my brain does not stop. I take what the senior gives me and run with it. I have a plan already designed, based on talking to the mom earlier. Because I have two sons, I know boys need directions clearly and concisely. They listen, they understand, and we move fast. They’re smart, and they can tell right away they’re going to look good in these photos and we’re not doing anything cringy.

  4. All done. Senior leaves feeling like they’ve accomplished something, and Mom can’t wait to come back and see the results. 9 times out of 10, as they leave the senior says, “I really liked that.”

So if you’re looking for ideas for a senior boy Portrait Session, here’s a recent one photographed entirely on location in Springfield. This one featured a recommended upgrade- photographing another senior friend at the same time!

Not only does the second senior get a special price on their session fee, but it’s fun! Senior boys tend to be pretty serious; but when your friend is lurking around while you’re being photographed, it’s hard to be serious the entire time. Moms, call a friend who also has a graduate, and let’s book the photoshoots together! You can both cross something off your list, and we can even stop for snacks on the way- keep scrolling. ;)

I have hundreds of outtakes, taken over the years, of moms fixing hair. It’s the mom thing to do.

Getting set up in a parking garage for the car shoot. Cars = important

Keeping it real with a water bottle and plastic cup in background. (Those will be retouched out for the printed image in Mom’s album).

Don’t be hangry in senior photos.

Snacky senior pics

Real life

Like I said above, these boys are friends and their moms are friends, so we thought it would be fun to book their senior pictures at the same time. I recommend this. Not only was it fun for all of us, but I caught many genuine expressions. It’s hard to be serious when friends (who really know you) are involved.

Happy 13th Birthday to Jack

Jack is my firstborn. The tiny tot I used to call “The Calotype Poster Child” is now a tall teenager.

I didn’t realize how enjoyable life can be with an older child! Instead of throwing food on the floor and singing “The Wheels on the Bus,” we now have such good conversations together.  (AND… some boring ones… because my interest in Star Wars is about a level three, and he’s a solid ten.  But he’s not as interested in writing essays as I am, so we’re even).

We’re learning to compromise (an essay on Star Wars!) and he’s great at unloading the dishwasher, so he can talk all he wants about SW composer John Williams “He also did Jaws, Mom! Isn’t that cool?” and other things I never knew I needed to know. Thirteen is a lucky number!

School Picture Event Highlights

Every year, Calotype offers The School Picture Event. It’s for people who love yearly school pictures of their children, but wish they weren’t so bland and boring and Lifetouch-y. Annually in August, I open the studio for two days of personal, one-of-a-kind school pictures where clients get to watch the process and view their images right away.

Click through to see a variety of kids we photographed (not all kids are featured at the parents’ request for privacy).

This was actually a test shot where I was metering the white wall. They ended up loving it and putting it in their album. “It looks like we’re dating,” she laughed.
